Understanding more about psychotherapy

How to choose a therapist

Therapy is, by its very nature, an intensely personal experience.  It is important to choose a therapist with whom you feel comfortable.  It is perfectly acceptable to speak to or meet several therapists before making a choice.

You might want to consider whether you prefer to work with a man or a woman, the age and experience of the therapist with whom you would feel most comfortable, what you expect in terms of their experience.  You may also want to consider administrative factors such as their location, fee structure and the times they have available.

Key concepts

Integrative

I have learned many different theoretical models and developed a way of working which has been woven from the threads of many different constructs.

Relational

We have a relationship which has elements in it which reflect other, earlier relationships you have had in your life - and we work with that.  Also, the therapeutic encounter impacts on, and potentially changes, both participants.  If this meeting is to be real, the therapist must bring her vulnerability and humility to the meeting, as well as her experience and strength.

What can we work on?

You may be seeking help for any of a variety of reasons, whether it is a long term problem that just does not seem to improve, or an immediate crisis that is causing you distress.  You may feel overwhelmed by emotions or physical symptoms, or, rather, experience life as empty of either meaning or vividness.  You may have a very clear idea of what you want to get from therapy or you may know nothing more than that you want some sort of independent help or support, someone to talk to.
